Shalom (שלום) again form Kindergarten,

We started our Sunday off with a review of the story of creation.  We talked about how many days it took and what happened on which day.  Most of the students remembered the important parts, 6 days of work and 1 day of rest, Shabbat (שבת).  We will be focusing more on Shabbat and its traditions later this school year.

When we were done with the Creation Story review we switched to our Hebrew studies.  After a quick review of our Hebrew Vocabulary, both regular and “sounds like English”, we learned a few new words.

Our review words were:

Ball – ka-door - כדור
Bottle – bak-book - בקבוק
Zipper – reech-ratch - 'ריצ' רצ
Spider - akavish - עכביש
Chocolate milk – shoko - שוקו
Thank You – toda – תודה
Peace, Hello, Goodbye – shalom - שלום
Mouse (computer and animal) – achbar – עכבר

“Sounds like English” words:

Banana - banana - בננה
Pizza - pizza - פיצה
Telephone – telephone - טלפון
Television – televisia - טלויזיה
Cell phone – telephone cellulari - טלפון סלולרי
Chocolate -  shokolad - שוקולד
Gorilla – gorilla - גורילה
Giraffe- giraffe - ג 'ירפה
Zebra – zebra - זברה

Our new words this week were all names of colors:

Yellow – tzahov - צהוב
Pink – varod - ורוד
Red – adom - אדום
Green – yarok - ירוק
Blue – kachol - כחול
White – lavan - לבן
Black- shachor – שחור

We also found some great videos on YouTube to help us practice the Alef - Bet.  Check them out:

After Hebrew and then snack time we went to the Temple’s main sanctuary to sing some songs with Cantor Shivers.  Cantor taught us some new songs which we will be singing for parents at the DMJFCS New School Ground Breaking Ceremony at Caspe Terrace in 2 weeks.

When we got back to class we practiced writing our last 2 letters of the Alef – Bet on our transparencies.
Shin –ש
Tav – ת

When we were done we moved over to the floor to practice reciting the Shemah (שמע) and our positive affirmations while meditating.

At the end of the day a permission slip was sent home to allow your child to ride on the bus and eat hot dogs.  Please send it back next week or mail it to the main school office.  Also remember library books are due back on 11-3.

Shalom (שלום) again form Kindergarten.

We had another great day at JFCS last Sunday.  It was still nice out so we were able to be outside for little bit during break.

We started our morning off with a telling of The Story of Creation.   The creation week consists of divine commands executed over six days, followed by a seventh day of rest.

First day: G-d creates light. The light is separated from the darkness, and "day" and "night" are named.
Second day: G-d creates the sphere of earth and separates the heavens from the waters below.
Third day: G-d commands the waters below to be gathered together in one place, and dry land to appear, "earth" and "sea" are named.  G-d commands the earth to grow grass, plants, and fruit-bearing trees.
Fourth day: G-d creates the Sun and Moon, and the stars.
Fifth day: G-d creates birds and sea creatures.
Sixth day: G-d makes wild beasts, livestock and reptiles. G-d then creates humanity in G-d’s image
Seventh day: G-d, having completed the heavens and the earth, rests from work, and blesses and the seventh day we call Shabbat when we are supposed to rest, the way G-d did.

After our Torah (תורה) study we switched to our Hebrew studies.  First we reviewed our Hebrew vocabulary:
Ball – ka-door - כדור
Bottle – bak-book - בקבוק
Zipper – reech-ratch - 'ריצ' רצ
Spider - akavish - עכביש
Chocolate milk – shoko - שוקו
Thank You – toda – תודה

Our new words were:
Peace, Hello, Goodbye – shalom - שלום
Mouse (computer and animal) – achbar – עכבר

Then we reviewed our “sounds like English” Hebrew vocabulary:
Banana - banana - בננה
Pizza - pizza - פיצה
Telephone – telephone - טלפון
Television – televisia - טלויזיה
Cell phone – telephone cellulari - טלפון סלולרי
Chocolate -  shokolad - שוקולד

Our new “sounds like English” words were:
Gorilla – gorilla - גורילה
Giraffe- giraffe - ג 'ירפה
Zebra – zebra -  זברה

After vocabulary we went on to practice writing our Alef –Bet.  The new letters this week were:
Pey - פ
Tzadik - צ
Koof - ק
Resh – ר

This school year each of the grades gets to decorate the bulletin board at the end of the school hallway.  The students came up with the idea to trace each others hands and to cut out the tracing on colors and lay them out in a rainbow pattern.  If you get a chance take a look, it really turned out to be quite nice.

Shavuah Tov-(שבוע טוב) from the kindergarten class.

This week we started our Sunday off reviewing our past Hebrew words:

Ball – ka-door - כדור
Bottle – bak-book - בקבוק
Zipper – reech-ratch - 'ריצ' רצ
Spider - akavish - עכביש
Chocolate milk – shoko - שוקו

After the review, we learned one new word:

Thank You – toda – תודה

Then we discussed two new words that fall in to our “sounds like English” category:

Banana - banana - בננה
Pizza - pizza - פיצה

After our vocabulary lesson we went outside to run around for little bit to burn off the animal crackers and apple juice from snack.  It was probably the nicest Sunday weather we have had all year so we took full advantage of it.
When we got back inside we started working on a new project for the bulletin board in the school hallway.  After asking the kids, and getting many great ideas, we settled on one where we trace hand prints of everyone in the class.  We are then going to take the cut out hands, that are each different colors, and are going to arrange them in a rainbow for everyone to see.  They will be on display next Sunday.
We had a special treat this week.  Stacy Franklin met Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades on the steps outside the main sanctuary and led us in song time.  We sang Shalom Chaverim (שלום חברים), David Melech Israel (דוד, מלך ישראל), Shalom Alechem (שלום עליכם) and even had a dance to the tune of Emek Israel.

When we got back to class we learned how to write four more letters and practiced writing them on transparencies.
Mem - מ
Nun - נ
Samech - ס
Ayin - ע

At the end of the day we practiced saying the Shema (שמע) and reciting our positive affirmations while meditating.

Shalom (שלום) from kindergarten.  After an eventful week of Simchat Torah (שמחת תורה) and Kindergartens consecration service we started this week of reviewing all of our Hebrew words to date:

Ball – ka-door - כדור
Bottle – bak-book - בקבוק
Zipper – reech-ratch - 'ריצ' רצ

After the review, we learned two new words:
Spider - akavish - עכביש
Chocolate milk – shoko - שוקו

We also talked about how there are many words in Hebrew that sound a lot like their English translation.
Telephone – telephone - טלפון
Television – televisia - טלויזיה
Cell phone – telephone cellulari - טלפון סלולרי
Chocolate -  shokolad - שוקולד

When we were done with our vocabulary lesson we went to the library.  We were invited to the library to have a story read to us by Rachel Willkie-Shapiro.  She read us The Ten Little Rabbis by David Sokoloff.  It was an entertaining story about ten rabbis getting ready for and leading the High Holiday services and celebrations.  After the story Rachel helped us each check out a book from the library.  Remember they are due back on November 3rd.

After snack time we went upstairs to have song session with our new cantor Linda Shivers.  She taught us a great song about Noah’s Ark and also one of the traditional melodies for Shalom Aleichem (שלום עליכם).

When we got back to class we learned how to write four more letters and practiced writing them on transparencies.
Tet - ט
Yud - י
Kaf - כ
Lamed - ל

At the end of the day we practiced saying the Shema (שמע) and reciting some positive affirmations while meditating.

This week in kindergarten we started the day off learning about Tzedaka - צדקה. Tzedaka is an act of righteousness or charity. We learned that the reason we all bring some money to Sunday School and put it in our Tzedaka Box, is to help others. We talked about how there are people who don't have some of the basic things they need to live. Clothes, food, toothpaste, blankets, and toilet paper were things that we discussed that we all had at home and were always there. We learned that the small amount of money we bring each Sunday is actually a big help because it helps those people who truly need it.

After the Tzedaka discussion, we reviewed last weeks Sukkot lesson and learned about a few more things that belong in a Sukkah. The Lulav and Etrog are a mix of a piece of fruit, Etrog (אתרוג) – the fruit of a citron tree that represents our heart, and a group of three different tree branches. Lulav (לולב) – a ripe, green, closed frond from a date palm tree that represent our spine. Hadass (הדס) – boughs with leaves from the myrtle tree that represent our eyes. Aravah (ערבה) – branches with leaves from the willow tree that represent our mouths. We learned that these are all parts of our body we use to communicate with G-d. We then went out to the Sukkah and recited the traditional payers for sitting in the Sukkah and holding the Lulav and Etrog.

After being in the Sukkah we returned to the classroom and began our Hebrew lesson. I decided we needed a couple "fun to say" "everyday" words in Hebrew so we went with "zipper" reech-ratch ('רץ' ריץ) and "bottle" bak-book (בקבוק). Go ahead and ask your children they will help you with the pronunciation. After our vocabulary lesson we practiced writing and sounding out our next four letters of the Alef-Bet. Hay - ה, Vav - ו, Zayin - ז, and Chet - ח till the end of class.
